Main Differences Between Babysitters, Nannies, and Au pairs

Babysitters, nannies, and au pairs are all individuals who provide care for children, but there are some differences in terms of their role, responsibilities, and arrangement.

  • Babysitters: Babysitters are typically hired on an as-needed basis to watch children for a few hours or an evening while the parents are away. They may be teenagers or adults and may have varying levels of experience with children.
Babysitters usually work part-time and are not usually responsible for household chores beyond cleaning up after the children.

  • Nannies: Nannies are professional childcare providers typically hired to work full-time or part-time on a regular schedule. They are responsible for the day-to-day care of children. Nannies may also be responsible for light household duties related to the children, such as doing the children’s laundry, preparing meals, and organizing their activities.

  • Au pairs: An au pair is a young person from another country who comes to live with a host family and provides childcare in exchange for room, board, and a small salary. Au pairs typically work full-time and may live with the family for a year and possibly extend for longer(up to 2 years). They are responsible for the day-to-day care of the children, including preparing meals, helping with homework, and organizing activities.
